Culverden is a small township located on SH7 in the Hurunui District. Whilst primarily a service centre for the surrounding farms and agriculture businesses, Culverden is also a popular stop-off for travellers passing through. A selection of retail and hospitality businesses as well as the Culverden Domain make for a pleasant break for drivers.
Whilst the permanent population of Culverden is small, the wider Amuri area, which includes the nearby towns of Rotherham and Waiau, is home to over 2,000 residents. Those that live in the area enjoy the tranquility of rural life whilst being on the doorstep of some of New Zealand's most popular tourist attractions including Hanmer Springs village and the Waipara Wine Region.
The agriculture sector employs the majority of people in the Culverden area, with a wide range of employment opportunities available to those with experience in the industry.
Culverden is home to Amuri Area School; a co-educational composite school for years 0-13.
