It all began just one week after the birth of their first child, when James shared his plan to start a business with Emma. To her surprise, he had already taken the initiative—business cards were on the way. While the timing may not have been the best, his determination and passion was clear, and together, they decided to see where this venture could lead.
Starting Small, Dreaming Big
For the first year, Designer Gates was a part-time endeavour. James continued his day job while piloting the business, assessing market demand, and refining his vision. Emma, balancing the responsibilities of a newborn, supported him as he explored the potential of their idea. They quickly realised there was significant interest in high-quality, custom gates. Clients appreciated having a one-stop solution—from entranceway design to installation, including ground works, concrete, brick and block work and gate automation..
By the second year, the potential of the business was undeniable. A modest 76-square-meter workshop was leased, and investments were made in essential tools, vehicles and materials. With their savings tied up in the venture, there was no turning back. Every detail, from creating shelving systems for steel to acquiring a large plant and equipment required careful planning and resourcefulness.
Building the Team
Initially, it was just James and Emma. Emma—a former primary school teacher—found herself donning steel-capped boots and helping James meet demand. Despite the challenges, their dedication paid off. By the second year, the workload was too great for the two of them to handle alone.
Their first hire, Caleb, joined the team after a serendipitous connection through a family friend. Interviewed at their dining room table, Caleb quickly became an integral part of the company. Six years later, he thrives as the lead technician and senior team member and continues to contribute to the growth and evolution of Designer Gates.
Over time, Emma and James built a team that feels more like a family. Each member brings unique skills and perspectives, creating a collaborative environment where everyone feels invested in shared success.
Lessons Learned
In just two years, the company outgrew its first workshop. They’ve since moved to Ravenswood in 2022 into a purpose-built workshop and office of 475m2 – 6 times the size of the of their operation just four years earlier. Today, Designer Gates employs 12 people and is actively seeking new hires to manage increasing demand. Word of mouth, combined with a strong online presence and SEO efforts, has brought in a steady flow of work.
Emma has learned the importance of aligning new hires with company values. The team’s culture is built on mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence. The hiring process has become meticulous, ensuring every new member fits seamlessly into the close-knit group. It’s undeniable that this approach has paid off.
A Commitment to Craftsmanship & Sustainability
Every gate created by Designer Gates tells a story—of meticulous design, expert craftsmanship, and attention to detail. From the first onsite/in-person meeting, to the final installation, the team takes pride in delivering products that not only meet but exceed client expectations. Whether it’s a simple, functional design or an elaborate custom piece, each gate reflects the passion and precision that define Designer Gates.
Beyond the gates themselves, Emma, James, and their team are dedicated to building lasting client relationships, often working with clients again on additional properties or through referrals from family and friends.
Sustainability is an integral part of Designer Gates’ philosophy. All steel and aluminum are recycled, and all timber is either recycled or repurposed. Periodically, the public is invited to take parts removed from jobs, which can be reused for creative projects such as chicken coops, dog runs, and other practical applications. The company also partners with WasteCo, a waste management provider known for recycling beyond the usual plastics. WasteCo meticulously re-sorts rubbish, salvaging materials like timber, soft plastics, hard plastics, and even small pieces of cardboard, ensuring that only about a third of the company’s waste ends up in landfill.
The company focuses on maintaining a clean-burning fleet, ensuring vehicles are serviced yearly, have optimised loads and reduce unnecessary trips.
Rooted in the North Canterbury Community
The journey of Designer Gates wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the North Canterbury community, Emma says. From the early days, local word-of-mouth recommendations and partnerships have been instrumental in the company’s growth. This region is more than just a backdrop for the business; it’s home and a source of inspiration.
ENC’s support and resources have helped the company navigate challenges and seize new opportunities. Emma believes their expertise in connecting businesses with the right tools and networks has been invaluable. Emma believe winning the Trades & Services Award at the North Canterbury Business Awards, which is facilitated through ENC, was a massive milestone that validated their efforts and inspired the team to keep striving for excellence.
Looking Ahead
The journey of Designer Gates has been one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment. From humble beginnings in a tiny workshop to managing a thriving team, the company has built more than just gates—it has built a reputation for quality and innovation.
Emma envisions a future where Designer Gates continues to expand while maintaining its focus on comprehensive, personalised service that exceeds client expectations. With a dedicated and values-driven team and a clear vision, the future looks brighter than ever.
